we fought the law
the drive from los angeles to chicago was beautiful! especially the san rafael reef in utah. the next day, however, blake and i each got a speeding ticket. our first in yeeeears. blake's in colorado and mine in nebraska - as if in tribute to bruce springsteen's state trooper on his album, nebraska. "mister state trooper, please don't stop me." so many construction zones. it's really, really hard to drive 55 - or even 65. jason flew out. so who knows, maybe we saved ourselves another citation. in any case, we're glad to be here in chicago and are VERY excited for tomorrow's show at schubas with headlights and common loon. hooray. -jd

SURFWiSE
last tuesday we played the premier party for doug pray's latest film, "surfwise ", at the egyptian theater in hollywood. wow. what a treat to see the film on a huge screen - and the sound system and mix was tops! most all of the paskowitz family were there as well as surf legend, kelly slater. hugh masekela's son, sal, was there too. is he a surfer? the film will be in theaters this month. http://www.surfwisefilm.com/

the submarines: epic tour movie
before we went on the road in april we bought one of those little flip video cameras. here's some footage that we pasted together against "xavia". the shows were the first we played with our new drummer, jason stare, and it was such a blast. we'll do our best to keep on top of these postings during the upcoming tours this spring and summer.
lots of love. peace over and out.

cairo 1973
in the early 70's my dad was the principal of the american school in cairo, egypt. he recently gave me a ton of amazing slides. here's one of them. the guy in the suit and tie is a teacher from cairo american college and the other totally bad ass dudes are students.
i'll post some of these photographs now and again. there are some really cool snaps from growing up in dubai and our summer in iran. the one thing that strikes me in almost all of them is how totally freaking hip everyone looks - and this isn't the lower east side! it's north africa and the persian gulf. ah, the 70's. -jd

brimful of asha
i took blake on a mystery date the other night to see legendary indian singer, asha bhosle. wow. what an amazing and beautiful voice! she's best known for being a bollywood playback singer but some of the classical pieces she performed were the highlights of the evening. she claims to have sung over 30,000 songs. one of our favorite bands, cornershop, paid tribute to her in their 1997 hit, "brimful of asha". here's an early clip. -jd
